This learning event is right for you if you are striving to develop a contemporary curriculum for critical and creative thinkers.
Concept thinking is driven by ‘big ideas’ that transcend subject-specific content. Concepts are universal and timeless ideas that bring ‘real world’ meaning to content for students whilst providing flexibility for the learner in the process of inquiry. Learning and teaching through concepts supports the development of critical and creative thinkers and is fundamental to interdisciplinary or integrated curriculum projects.
This workshop provides insights into the characteristics of concepts and the elements of concept-based inquiry. The workshop also includes practical strategies for teachers and leaders including:
- effective planning for concept-based learning and teaching
- concepts in the Australian and Victorian curriculum
- engaging students and developing student agency through concept-based inquiry
- authentic assessment strategies that support inquiry, critical and creative thinking.
This can be explored in the context of primary or secondary schooling.

David Burton is a Principal Consultant and member of the School Improvement Team at ISV. Until recently he served as Head of Senior Campus at Woodleigh School, a role which included periods as Acting Principal, most recently during the COVID-19 crisis.
David has a background in teacher coaching and professional learning, curriculum development, middle years innovation and the integration of new learning technologies into the classroom. David has particular expertise with the International Baccalaureate programs. He was the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Coordinator at the International School of Paris and the Australian International School in Singapore. He has also led middle years initiatives for the Victorian Department of Education.
As a regular conference presenter and workshop leader over the last ten years, David has led professional learning with schools and teachers across Australia and New Zealand as well as throughout Asia, Europe and Africa on a variety of areas including IB program leadership, curriculum planning and development, authentic assessment and service learning. He has delivered various conference papers. He has also completed a Masters in School Leadership course, specialising in research into the efficacy of teacher collaboration.
