Schools engage contractors to provide services such as school maintenance, cleaning, construction, catering and security. Those services may pose significant risks to the health and safety of school staff, students and other individuals attending the school.  Under the Victorian Occupational Health and Safety Act, schools have a duty of care to contractors for matters over which the school has control. This duty cannot be overridden by the terms of a contract. Risk management consultants, Riskcom, will provide practical day-to-day guidance to help schools fulfill their duty of care. The guidance focusses on four key steps for effective contractor OHS management:

  • Contract specification: Clearly define the OHS requirements and expectations in contracts with contractors.

  • Contractor evaluation and selection: Assess contractors based on the qualifications, experience and safety practices.

  • Contractor monitoring: Regularly monitor contractor performance to ensure compliance and safety requirements.

  • Review of contractor performance: Evaluate contractor OHS practices.

Key takeaways

  • Deeper understanding of contractor management and safety in the school environment.
