This learning event is right for you if you are a literacy coordinator or foundation to year 3 teacher interested in the latest research on reading
Converging research on beginning reading instruction has led to a clearer understanding of the skills that lead to success with reading and how children learn to read. An overview of this research, including aspects of the Feuerstein Basic Instrumental Enrichment program will be highlighted, along with advice on how to structure reading programs to ensure that students are offered balanced reading instruction while learning to appreciate rich literature along the way.
Reading is a complex process that builds on oral language facility and encompasses both specific skill development (phonemic and decoding strategies) and the use of comprehension strategies. The precise way in which these processes combine need to be understood if teachers are to identify their students’ needs and teach them effectively.

Diane Bourke is a Project Manager at Independent Schools Victoria, after a long career as Head of Junior School. She has a passion for reading and learning, and strongly believes that a great teacher is one who never stops the quest for learning. Diane is a Program Advisor for the Junior Great Books series, Kindergarten to Year 1 program, in the United States of America, and both a Principal as Literacy Leader and Feuerstein Instrumental Enrichment Basic trainer. She has also had a long association with the Reggio Emilia Approach in Australia.
