Audience 

This learning event is right for you if you are a VCE Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics teacher interested in exploring Unit 4 SAC ideas and processes in a supported environment.

Description                                       

This one-day seminar will focus on the requirements of Unit 4 SACs for Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics. The Mathematics study design 2016-2020 requires a creative approach to developing SAC material that ensures the modelling or problem-solving tasks are genuine in nature and not just an extended collection of examination 2 questions. Participants will be provided with an overview of SAC requirements and have the opportunity to ask questions. A selection of modelling or problem solving starting points will be provided and time will be given to developing ideas for your SACs. Assessment options will also be explored.

Students undertaking these types of assessment, in addition to demonstrating their understanding and mastery of the content of the study, typically demonstrate the following key competencies and employability skills: Planning and organising, solving problems, using mathematical ideas and techniques (written) communication, use of information and communications technology, self management.

Presenter Information

David Leigh-Lancaster                   

Dr David Leigh-Lancaster is the Mathematics Curriculum Manager at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) and an experienced former mathematics teacher and head of faculty. He has been extensively involved in curriculum and resource review and development, teacher professional learning, examinations and school-based assessment.

David has longstanding interests in mathematical logic and model theory, the foundations, history and philosophy of mathematics and mathematics education, the nature of mathematical inquiry, curriculum design and teaching, learning and assessment in mathematics. His work involves connecting policy, research and practice; and engagement with stakeholders.

Deb Carmichael                

Deb Carmichael has taught mathematics for over 25 years across all secondary year levels and in a variety of contexts. She has held Head of Department roles and Senior Executive roles. Deb is now a Senior Advisor at Independent Schools Victoria, working in The Development Centre. This allows her use her experience, ideas, understanding of current research and passion for mathematics teaching and learning to engage and work with fellow educators.
