Selecting and Introducing Words: Understand principles for appropriate word selection, identify helpful word banks, and discover the features of effective vocabulary instruction. Delve into the first three steps of Marzano’s process, gaining strategies for introducing new vocabulary effectively.

Developing Deep Word Understanding: Focus on steps four and five of Marzano’s process. Engage in activities that promote semantic awareness, such as classification, exploring synonyms and antonyms, and collaborative tasks where students create definitions and visual representations. Learn techniques for teaching morphemic analysis, using context cues in texts, and fostering a love of words through Word of the Week, word walls, and group brainstorming for written work.

Consolidating Word Knowledge: Explore using collaborative learning, technology, and games to reinforce vocabulary. Discover IT tools that improve book access, simplify text, and facilitate enjoyable word knowledge expression. Participate in vocabulary review activities, including various games, and learn methods to measure progress in vocabulary knowledge.

Shirley Houston

Shirley Houston is an educational consultant with over 35 years of teaching experience and a Masters degree in Special Education. She is a long-standing Board member of The Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation of Western Australia. Shirley has established a reputation as a caring, dynamic and innovative educator whose programs reflect both current research and a deep understanding of the needs of students with learning difficulties and disabilities. She has taught students in years K-12 at government, Catholic and Independent schools, in Australia and in America.
