This learning event is right for you if you are keen to explore how you can involve parents more effectively in their child’s learning at home. You might be an experienced teacher who wants to develop your expertise or a new teacher who wants to expand your repertoire of strategies to engage with parents as partners.
Current assessment practices are very different to the assessment methods experienced by the parents of today’s school students. Involving parents in formative assessment is a useful way of engaging with parents on a meaningful level. It also has numerous benefits for students. With their experience of learning from home, parents are keen to continue their active support of their young people’s learning.

Research has shown that a key to facilitating positive change in a child’s academic attainment is the engagement of parents in learning outcomes in the home.
This learning event supports creating best practice toward the following VRQA standard(s):
- Curriculum and Student Learning – Student learning outcomes
- Curriculum and Student Learning – Monitoring and reporting on students’ performance.
- a synopsis of the latest research on parental engagement in learning
- an overview of the strategies to help parents have an active role in supporting their children’s learning
- connection with others who have built expertise in this role.
Aine Maher is an Ambassador for Independent Schools Victoria. She designs and delivers customised professional learning programs in the areas of curriculum, teaching and learning and leadership development. Aine is an accomplished presenter, a skilled communicator and, with expertise and experience in independent schools over many years, highly knowledgeable in her field. A dynamic networker, Aine has participated in a broad range of state and national advisory and representative committees giving her access to contemporary thinking and practice in learning design, organisational culture and leadership.
