This learning event is right for you if you are a Head of English Faculty/Department, a Director of Teaching and Learning or Pedagogy Leader.

 

Description                                  

To support the conceptual understandings needed in the revised and refined Australian Curriculum this full day session will spotlight the use of the Achievements Standards in alignment to, and in support of, the Content Descriptors.

The workshop will take a high-level cognitive approach drawing upon several mapping tools that can be used within your school context to start the dialogue of assessment and moderation of the Australian Curriculum. This is an opportunity to take a deeper dive into English, unpacking the rationale and how this subject area is linked to the General Capabilities.

We will be further supported in our thinking and exploration of the Australian Curriculum by the English Leader from ACARA. The final part of the day is protected time to unpack your thinking in how you will take this back to your school to ensure a vertical and horizontal curriculum is achieved from Foundation to Year 10.

Presenter information

 

Helen Schiele    

Helen has worked in the educational field for some 28 years. She has developed professional learning opportunities in the areas of curriculum design, differentiation, professional learning communities, literacy and numeracy and artistic learning strategies, and is a trained Cognitive Coach. Prior to entering the primary and secondary areas, Helen worked extensively as an early childhood practitioner predominately in low socio-economic areas and multicultural communities. Helen has completed her Master’s in Education by research and is now completing her Doctoral studies in ‘collective efficacy in education’.

 

 

Denise Roberts

Denise Roberts has been an English teacher and educational leader for 25 years, working in mixed ability classrooms and with targeted programs for students with specific learning needs. She has also worked in cross-curricular literacy roles, developing activities and units to build students’ literacy across learning areas. Denise is particularly interested in the capacity of English to offer students the scope to refine their skills of reflection, critical thinking and creativity and the ways in which it provides opportunities for both collaboration and independent endeavours. She believes that the study of English builds in students the capacity for empathy and understanding of experiences beyond their immediate world. Denise is currently the Curriculum Specialist, English at the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).
