Description
Principalship requires knowledge, courage and wisdom across a range of disciplines - from governance, compliance and risk, learning and wellbeing to data analysis, literacy and procurement. As part of ISV’s commitment to developing leadership capacity within our member schools. new leaders are invited to join our New Principals Network 2026. ISV has been running leadership development programs for principals for 20 years. The New Principals Network has been developed in partnership with current principals, recently retired principals and respected educational professionals.

Presenter information
Heather Schnagl
Dr Heather Schnagl retired as Principal of Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar School, a position she held for 20 years, at the end of 2017. Initially a research scientist in both university and industry, Heather then discovered her passion for teaching and helping young people learn. Her years as a student (in her final undergraduate year) and as a tutor at St Hilda’s College were truly formative, especially in developing her love of teaching.
Heather was one of the inaugural Council Members at the Victorian Institute of Teaching and is currently a Disciplinary Panel Member. She has been a member of various educational councils and associations, including 17 years on the Board of Independent Schools Victoria, where she now supports a number of programs, especially in school leadership, the NCCD and COVID19 on a part-time basis. She has also served as a Board Member, and subsequently as the Chair of the Ethics Committee at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute. Heather was made a Member of the Order of Australia for her significant service to education as a school principal, and through roles with professional organizations in 2014. Heather holds Fellowships from both the Australian College of Educators and Australian Council for Educational Leaders. She also received the Hedley Beare Educator of the Year in 2010 and was awarded the James Laing Professional Development Award from the Principals Australia Institute in 2012. She received an honorary Doctorate from La Trobe University in recognition of her contribution in the field of education in 2016 and was awarded the Sir James Darling Medal by the Australian College of Educators in 2017 for her outstanding and continued contribution to education in Victoria.
Glen McKeeman
Glen McKeeman has over 40 years’ experience as a teacher and leader in independent schools in Victoria. His passion to make a positive difference in the lives of young people was evident during his time at Carey Baptist Grammar, The Geelong College and at Christian College Geelong where he served for 32 years, the last fifteen as Principal.
Glen’s contribution to education included his involvement with the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (past Branch Chair) and the Independent Schools Victoria Board.
He has a desire to support school leaders as he believes that school communities thrive when they are well led and supported to provide the absolute best for students and staff.
Before completing his full-time career, he held the position as Head of Innovation and Learning at ISV. His current role as a Principal Ambassador at ISV allows him to continue his contribution to the education sector.
