This course is ideal for school Board/Council Members who are new to their role or those wishing to refresh their knowledge. This course will focus on School Structure, Roles and Responsibilities, Governance versus Management, Legal Obligations, Confidentiality, Conflicts of Interest, Effective Board Meetings, Risk Management, Crisis Management and Financial Literacy.

Presenter information

Adam Berryman

Adam Berryman is the founding principal of Risk Management Advisors and has been advising businesses for over 25 years on risk management. He currently assists organisations to conduct their own Risk Management Reviews with a view to developing their risk management framework and understand their organisational risk profile. Adam has also consulted for two major global insurance broking firms. Adam holds a Bachelor of Economics, Graduate Diploma – Insurance and Graduate Diploma – Risk Management.

Marianne Stillwell

Marianne is currently the Chair of the Board of Management for Independent Schools Victoria (ISV). Marianne is also the President of the Wesley College Council, and has been a member since 2006. She is Chair of their Strategy, Ethics and Governance, and Remuneration Committees. As part of ISV's governance program delivery, Marianne is a regular presenter to Member Schools and member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. In her professional career, Marianne spent 12 years in finance management roles with Ford Credit Australia Limited, and has 10 years of secondary teaching experience in Catholic and Independent schools. Marianne is currently Chair of Stillwell Motor Group, a family company specialising in prestige motor vehicle retail.

Philip Grutzner

Philip Grutzner was elected onto the Board of Independent Schools Victoria in May 2011.

Philip commenced as the 15th Headmaster of Melbourne Grammar School in 2020. Philip’s experience includes roles as Headmaster of Braemar College in Woodend, Victoria, Headmaster of St Peter’s College in Adelaide and Principal of Carey Baptist Grammar School, where he oversaw a significant programme of innovation and development. Philip is also the ISV representative on the Board of Independent Schools Australia (ISA). 

Nigel Bartlett

Nigel Bartlett has 25 years of experience in providing support and advice to Member Schools in the areas of school finances and data. His particular areas of focus are government funding and accountabilities to government.
