This learning event is right for you if you are a mainstream primary classroom teacher with English as an Additional Language or Culturally and Linguistically Diverse students in your classes. This workshop is designed for teachers who have no background in EAL or CALD teaching methodology


At a time when classroom teachers are increasingly asked to cater for individual student differences, many mainstream teachers feel ill-equipped to deal with the EAL/CALD students in their classes. This one-day workshop will look at what life is like for an EAL or CALD student in a Victorian classroom, and participants will look at ways they can help these students understand the content in their courses, as well as simple ways they can modify their program to suit EAL and CALD students.

This is a hands-on workshop, and participants will work with the instructor to adapt some of their existing classroom activities that cater for EAL and CALD students; they will come away with a host of new ideas for activities, as well as teaching materials that they will develop during the workshop. Please note that particpants will will need to bring a laptop in order to participate fully throughout the day.

Presenter information

Rowena Bata                     

Rowena Bata has been a French and EAL teacher for 25 years and has worked at schools in Victoria as well as in France, Papua New Guinea and Malaysia. She has held various leadership positions and has taught students of all ages. Rowena has a Master’s Degree in Linguistics, with a focus on second language acquisition.  She works with her students to develop language learning activities that engage and build confidence. Rowena’s current interests include languages advocacy, the use of technology in language learning and bridging the gap between the linguistic theories of second language acquisition and what happens in a classroom.
