Description
The Berry Street education model (BSEM) is a practical approach to teaching and learning that enables teachers to work effectively with all students; from those with complex, unmet learning needs, to those who feel increasing academic and social pressures. The BSEM approach aims to improve student engagement, growth, and academic achievement because it provides teachers with:
- practical strategies for dealing with circumstances that are detrimental to students and to whole class learning
- understanding pedagogical strategies to engage and benefit all students have been shown to be particularly effective with children with behaviours outside of the norm
- the ongoing development of strategies that reinforce cognitive and behavioral change, that can be assimilated into expected classroom practices and lessons
- strategies to improve teacher awareness of self-care and wellbeing.
The Berry Street Education Model has been independently evaluated and research suggests that both students’ engagement and academic results increase when teachers implement the model.
