Description

The Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) course equips participants with the knowledge, skills and confidence to provide initial support to a young person who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help is received or the situation resolves.

The course follows a blended delivery approach, consisting of a self-paced eLearning component and a facilitated face-to-face workshop, focused on applying practical, evidence-informed strategies in school contexts.

Participants learn how to recognise and respond to a range of mental health presentations commonly emerging during adolescence.

Mental Health Crisis situations covered:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe effects of drug or alcohol use
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Aggressive behaviours

Developing Mental Health problems covered:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems
  • Eating disorders

Schools play a critical role as a point of connection, early identification and support for young people. This is particularly important during adolescence, when many mental health challenges first emerge. This course supports school staff to respond early, confidently and appropriately within their role.
