Description

Twice exceptional (2E) learners are gifted students who also experience learning challenges and in today’s classrooms, their needs are more visible and important than ever. This session explores how strengths and complexities intersect, and how schools can create environments where 2E students truly thrive.

Across the day, participants will unpack current research, explore practical strategies, and collaborate on solutions that support the academic, social and wellbeing needs of twice exceptional learners. Leave with a toolkit of personalised learning approaches you can implement immediately.

Twice exceptionality - commonly referred to as 2E - continues to be an area of growing focus across Australian schools in 2026, particularly as inclusive education policy, neurodiversity-affirming practice, and personalised learning commitments strengthen nationwide. This session provides a deep dive into the lived experiences of twice-exceptional learners: students who demonstrate high ability while also navigating learning difficulties, disabilities, or other diagnoses that can mask strengths or complicate achievement.

Participants will examine how 2E learners’ cognitive, emotional, and social profiles intersect, influencing their learning, engagement, wellbeing, and identity development. With increasing attention on early identification and strengths-based supports in 2026, the session highlights current approaches and practical tools to help schools better recognise and respond to the complexity of twice exceptionality.

We will explore the barriers 2E students commonly face in contemporary classrooms - including issues relating to executive function, sensory processing, task initiation, perfectionism, and school engagement - and unpack how today’s instructional models, assessment practices, and school structures can be adapted to reduce friction and increase access.

Throughout the day, participants will work collaboratively to design responsive, personalised and future focused learning pathways that honour both the potential and the challenges of 2E learners. Emphasis will be placed on actionable strategies, multidisciplinary collaboration, and partnering effectively with families and support networks to ensure holistic, aligned support.

Key takeaways

  • Understand the unique profiles of 2E learners
  • Build inclusive, strengths based classrooms
  • Design personalised, flexible learning provisions
  • Partner effectively with parents, carers and support teams
